Vineyard reflections in January: The vineyard is quiet. This is the coldest month of the year, and wet. The sheep are grazing in the vineyard. New lambs are born in the second week of January. Also in the second week of January, we begin our winter pruning. This entails removing all but the strongest cane at each spur position and pruning that selected cane so that only 3 buds remain. The canes are thrown to the middle of the row, where later they will be shredded by the flail mower and decompose, returning nutrients to the soil. Sometimes, we find a cordon arm that is weak or diseased. In these cases, we may bend a strong cane over to form a new cordon arm altogether. We start our pruning at the highest blocks (which generally bud out earlier because they catch the sun earlier and are thereby warmer) and work our way down to the lowest blocks. |
